Ginny Z Berson in Ohio
In 1971, twelve young, D.C. lesbian-separatist activists came together and formed a collective, writing a nationally-distributed feminist newspaper called The Furies. Sharing their home, loves, children, and work, and intent on starting a revolution and seizing state power, the collective was intense and short-lived, breaking up in less than two years. Yet, what they wrote shaped and influenced our feminist and lesbian communities and institutions for the next fifty years. Many of The Furies are familiar names to lesbians, such as Ginny Z Berson (author of Olivia on the Record), Rita Mae Brown, Columbusite Sharon Deevey, JEB, and Charlotte Bunch.
The event will include a screening of Jacqueline Rhodes’ 2020 documentary profiling members of the collective, Once a Fury, to be followed with a panel discussion, featuring two of the original Furies, Ginny Berson and Sharon Deevey, as they discuss their thoughts on their time in The Furies.
