Thank you to the many community members who came to our standing-room-only April 26 community event at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, “Struggle, Then and Now: Intergenerational Voices on the Bay Area Lesbian Movement.” The event was supported by a grant from the Horizons Foundation and co-sponsored by the GLBT Historical Society, NIA Collective, and Openhouse.
The evening program began at 7pm with original readings by Joy Lam, Animal Prufrock, and Judy Grahn, who were joined by Dulce Garcia and Lenn Keller for a roundtable discussion. The program also featured a special performance by Anne Bluethenthal & Dancers. The discussion continued afterwards in the community room, where people admired a photo exhibit by photographer Cathy Cade, enjoyed snacks and sangria, and stood in line to get books signed by Judy.
While our fall 2011 community event explored the formation of the Bay Area lesbian community in the 1960s and 1970s, “Struggle, Then and Now” highlighted the continuing impact that the legacy of this movement has had on lesbian/bisexual women and their allies in the Bay Area today.
