Geling Yan’s Novella Nanjing Heroes Being Adapted for Film

May 1, 2011

Geling Yan, author of White Snakes and other stories, is working on a novel called Nanjing Heroes, based on the Nanjing Massacre of 1937. The novel is currently being made into a film by director Zhang Yimou (who also directed To Live, Raise the Red Lantern, and House of Flying Daggers), based on Ms. Yan’s film script. The film stars Oscar award–winning Christian Bale.

Aunt Lute published the first English translation of Geling Yan’s writing, White Snakes and other stories, translated by Lawrence Walker. A story from the collection, “Celestial Bath,” was the basis for Joan Chen’s film Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl. As a member of China’s Writers’ Association and Hollywood’s Writers’ Guild of America, it’s not surprising that Ms. Yan’s work moves effortlessly between the book page and movie screen.
